This summer’s intense heatwaves have led to at least 35,000 excess deaths across Europe, though the actual numbers are likely higher as some countries are still finalizing their assessments. The heat has severely impacted Germany, France, and Spain, which together account for over 25,000 of these deaths. Germany has been hit the hardest, with around 14,000 heat-related deaths reported from April to early August, marking its deadliest summer for heat since records began. Spain, experiencing similar challenges, has recorded nearly 5,000 deaths attributed to the heat since May, setting a new grim record for the country.
In France, preliminary data shows about 7,300 excess deaths between late May and July, though this does not yet include figures from August. The United Kingdom, Belgium, the Netherlands, Poland, and Switzerland have also seen notable increases in mortality rates during periods of extreme heat. These heatwaves have repeatedly pushed temperatures past 40°C across extensive areas of western and central Europe, shattering numerous national and local temperature records along the way. Climate scientists attribute the rising frequency and intensity of such extreme heat events to climate change.
Identifying heat-related deaths can be challenging, as extreme temperatures often exacerbate pre-existing cardiovascular, respiratory, and other health conditions, rather than being recorded as the direct cause of death. This complexity in determining the exact toll underscores the potential for higher figures as more data becomes available.
Experts anticipate that the overall death toll across Europe will increase further as additional mortality data is compiled and August figures are included. The significant number of deaths underscores the escalating public health threats posed by increasingly severe heatwaves, necessitating urgent attention and action to mitigate the impacts of climate change.
