As high-level discussions aimed at fostering peace in Ukraine commenced, Norway implemented partial airspace restrictions over Oslo and the Romerike region on Tuesday. The move coincided with the arrival of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who is engaging with international leaders to push for diplomatic solutions to Russia’s ongoing conflict with Ukraine.
President Zelensky’s agenda includes meetings with Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre and Finnish President Alexander Stubb. Additional participation comes from U.S. special envoy Steve Witkoff, with Jared Kushner contributing remotely. The talks are scheduled to extend through Wednesday, underscoring the urgency and importance of these diplomatic efforts.
Prime Minister Støre emphasized the goal of steering discussions towards a more constructive pathway. Both Norway and Finland have been steadfast supporters of Ukraine, providing financial backing, military cooperation, and engaging in broader European security initiatives since Russia’s full-scale invasion began in February 2022.
The backdrop of these discussions is marked by continued Russian assaults on Ukrainian cities and critical infrastructure. Ukraine has persistently called for increased Western air defense support and ongoing international pressure on Moscow. The stakes are high, and the diplomatic community is keen to find a resolution that prioritizes Ukraine’s interests.
In parallel, President Zelensky met with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, a dialogue that Kyiv hopes will reinforce Washington’s support, including issuing warnings about potential Russian offensives. The discussions in Oslo are seen as a critical opportunity for political leaders to ensure Ukraine remains central to any proposed solutions to end the conflict.
