In a bold demonstration of technological innovation, Elon Musk has unveiled a prototype of the Tesla Roadster 2 equipped with SpaceX-developed rocket thrusters. The showcase took place in Texas, where the electric sports car was seen ascending a curved ramp and executing aerial maneuvers with the help of these thrusters before safely landing. This fusion of electric vehicle technology and rocket propulsion underscores Musk’s vision of a potential flying car.
Musk detailed the vehicle’s capabilities, suggesting it could perform complex aerial rolls and maneuvers using altitude controls and rear-mounted thrusters. However, he also noted that the vehicle might face legal challenges in certain jurisdictions due to its aerial capabilities. The demonstration was conducted remotely to mitigate safety risks.
The Tesla Roadster 2 is slated for production in 2028, with an estimated price tag exceeding $200,000. Tesla has plans to offer various versions of the vehicle, including a high-performance model and a specialized variant featuring the thrust system. Additionally, a single-seat rocket version with a complete flight system is proposed to be available by invitation only.
Despite the groundbreaking demonstration, Tesla has cautioned that the flying features are not intended for use on public roads. This prototype highlights Musk’s ambition to integrate electric vehicle technology with aerospace advancements. Nevertheless, significant considerations regarding its practical application, safety standards, and regulatory approvals remain unresolved.
