Istanbul Airport has overtaken Heathrow Airport to become the busiest in Europe for passenger traffic in July. The Turkish hub processed 8.15 million passengers during the month, surpassing Heathrow’s 7.86 million. This shift highlights a significant change in air travel patterns, with Heathrow witnessing a 1.5% drop in passenger numbers compared to the previous year. In contrast, Istanbul Airport experienced a 2.3% increase in traffic.
One factor contributing to the decline at Heathrow is the ongoing disruptions related to the conflict in the Middle East, which has affected travel routes and schedules. This development has intensified calls for the UK government to approve Heathrow’s proposed third runway, an expansion plan valued at £33 billion. The addition of a new runway could boost Heathrow’s annual capacity to approximately 150 million passengers, a move that the airport argues is essential for enhancing the UK’s global connectivity in trade and tourism.
Opened in 2018, Istanbul Airport benefits from a larger site and operates 24/7, currently managing three runways with plans to introduce a fourth by the end of 2026. This infrastructure advantage allows it to accommodate a higher volume of passengers, positioning it as a key player in the European aviation market.
While Heathrow faces challenges in maintaining its top spot, other UK airports are experiencing growth. London Stansted and Manchester airports reported record numbers in July, with Stansted handling 3.1 million passengers and Manchester seeing 3.4 million. These figures underscore the increasing demand for air travel in the UK, despite the pressures facing its largest airport.
